Treasure Valley ASME Scholarship Contest

Two $400.00 ASME Scholarships are available to undergraduate and graduate mechanical engineering students enrolled at any accredited university in Idaho. High school seniors who have been accepted to start a mechanical engineering program in the fall 2012 semester are also eligible.  The application form is available here or request by email from asmetv@gmail.com.

Currently on the meeting schedule are:

March 20, 2012: ASME Career Development Seminar

Time:        7:00-8:30 pm

Location: Boise State University – Micron Engineering Center room MEC 106 lecture hall

Alex Gutierrez, an employment specialist with Boise State's Career Center will speak on how companies are using LinkedIn to find talented engineers and will walk those present through the steps of setting up a LinkedIn account.  All interested practicing engineers, engineering students, and recruiters are welcome to attend.

Following Alex Gutierrez, Jon Anson, chairperson of the ASME Treasure Valley Section, will talk about the Principals and Practice in Engineering Exam (PE) and Professional Development Hours (PDHs). Following the seminar, there will be hors d’oeuvres and opportunities to network with other mechanical engineers and representatives from local engineering companies.

Whether or not you are graduating this semester, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to help yourself to be noticed by employers, how to develop your professional skills following graduation, and more about the PE. This will also be a great opportunity to meet recruiters and hiring managers from local companies who employ engineers. Bring business cards and copies of your resume if you are seeking a job.

Directions – from the corner of Broadway and University drive ie; BSU football stadium, head West for 4 blocks on University drive. Left on Manitou for 1 block to Belmont, park on the street. You are at the 4 story Micron Engineering Center which is behind the Engineering Technology Center on University drive. (Additional parking is available 3 blocks west at the Lincoln parking garage)

March 6, 2012: Direct Exchange Ground Source Heating and Cooling

Time:        6:30 – 8:00 pm

Location: Quality Heating and Cooling, 11225 W President Drive, Boise Idaho 83713

(phone: 377-3555 or 559-2399)

Quality Heating and Cooling and Global Energy will conduct a practical presentation on the design and installation of Direct GeoExchange (DX) HVAC systems. Direct GeoExchange is a term used by the ASHRAE and the AHRI for technology using buried copper refrigerant lines, rather than a water or glycol heat exchange fluid. These buried copper pipes, or earth loops, act as the evaporator when in the heating mode, and the condenser when in the cooling mode.

Quality Heating and cooling has been serving the Treasure Valley since 1976. Owner Wayne Van Cleave installed his first ground source heat pump in 1978.

Recognizing continuity of ground heat transfer as a fundamental requirement in the reliability and efficiency of ground source heating systems, Global Energy was founded in 2009 to provide licensed expertise and specialized equipment, not previously available in Idaho, for the installation of high quality GX and DX ground loops for systems in nearly any regional geology.

Dinner will be provided so please RSVP for this meeting to asmetv@gmail.com.

Directions:  From Franklin Road, turn north onto Five Mile.  At the stoplight, turn west (left) onto Executive Drive for about ¼ mile, right onto Meadowland Drive, the left onto W. President Drive.  Quality Heating and Cooling is on the left before you get to the Boise Indoor Soccer Arena.

February 21, 2012: Patent Law Reform Seminar

Time:        6:30 – 8:00 pm

Location: Boise State University – Micron Engineering Center, Room MEC 106 Lecture Hall

Christopher Cuneo Attorney at Law of Parsons Behle & Latimer will be talking about the changes in the patent law that will be taking place in 2012.  These changes are significant relative to how to apply for a patent, how to get credit for an idea, publishing your ideas so you can get credit, and to whom a patent will be issued to.  All the rules that you thought you knew have changed.  Come learn about the new patent law rules.
