Program
Objective:
To
have a distinguished panel of legislators, members of academia, and
representatives from industry and the private sector address Florida's
future role in Aerospace and its impact on the economy and the opportunities
for technically trained people - current engineers, engineering students,
and young people considering science and engineering as a professional
career.
Program
Significance:
Aerospace
plays a significant role in Florida's economy. Its future direction
is of major concern to State Government (both the Executive and Legislative
Branches), those employed by the Aerospace industry in Florida, the
communities around the State affected by this important industry, the
business community, and the academic community in terms of curricula,
and attracting qualified students.
The Executive
Branch has established the Florida Space Authority, under the direction
of former Astronaut, Capt. Winston Scott (USN-Ret.). Florida's Lt. Governor,
Toni Jennings, is the Board Chairperson, and the State Legislature has
appointed board members. Tallahassee's aerospace involvement resides
in the newly opened FAMU/FSU College of Engineering's Challenger Learning
Center, headed by former astronaut, Dr. Norman Thagard.
