Overview of API 579 Recommended Practice -- Fitness-for-Service

An overview of the of the newly released API 579 "Recommended Practice For Fitness-for-Service Document" will be presented. This document is designed to provide some standardization to the fitness-for-service assessment techniques for pressurized equipment in the refinery and chemical industry. This presentation will provide a description of the areas covered by API 579 along with the approach used in each of the nine areas of application.

Les Loushin is the principal engineering specialist for mechanical integrity at the Lyondell Chemical Company. He is also the Vice-Chairman of the API Task Group on Fitness-for-Service that is publishing the recommended practice, RP 579. During his three decade long career, Les has held numerous positions in the petroleum and chemical process industries and has worked both domestically and internationally. He has been an active member of industrial organizations, which have included the Materials Properties Council, American Society for Testing and Materials, NACE International, British Standards.

Larry Connelly is a Mechanical Engineer with nearly 20 years of experience in the Oil and Gas Industry. Larry has worked for Exxon Production Research for 12 years and Stress Engineering Services for 7 years. He has conducted fitness-for-service work for many clients over this time period involving finite element analysis and fracture mechanics analysis. Larry is currently a member of the API 579 Committee.

Directions: The Celanese Park Pavilion Building is located beyond their plant. Take Bayport Blvd off Bay Area Blvd (between Fairmont and Red Bluff). Follow this through and past the Celanese plant to Steel Pkwy and take a left (heading towards the golf course). The Pavilion will be on the right.
