"
INVENTING FLIGHT -- THE SCIENCE OF BALLOONS TO THE
TECHNOLOGY OF WINGS"

TOPIC AND SPEAKER:
Dr. Tom Crouch, Senior Curator of Aeronautics for the National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian Institution and author of over 20 books and 100 published articles, will give this presentation. This lecture, richly illustrated with slides, compares and contrasts the processes behind each time flight was invented - once in the 18th century, when the first balloons were flown, and again in the early 20th century, when Wilbur and Orville Wright first flew.  The lecture casts the story in terms of the nature of science and technology.

Dr. Crouch has been a Smithsonian employee since 1974, where he has served both the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) and the National Museum of American History (NMAH) in a variety of curatorial and administrative posts.  Most of Dr. Crouch's work has been on aspects of the history of flight technology. Throughout his career, Dr. Crouch has played a major role in planning museum exhibitions.
