NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET

Who really invented the Internet?  Dr. Nicolas Alexopoulos, Dean, School of Engineering for University of California Irvine, has a fascinating presentation about the genesis and destruction of the First Internet over 2200 years ago.  He will present his lecture at the NEW Banquet on Friday, February 27, 2004.

This presentation focuses on the historic events in the creation of Alexandria, the only seaport Egypt ever had.  The evolution of Alexandria as the international city of the ancient world and as the first multilingual, multi-religious, and multiethnic society will be discussed.  The concept of Alexandria as an ancient and the first Internet in the creation and accumulation of knowledge and as the center of information processing and dissemination will be brought to light.  Emphasis will be placed in the founding of the Library/Museum of Alexandria and its impact in the nourishing of some of the greatest minds of all time in literature, science, medicine, and engineering.

The lecture will conclude with a discussion of the events which led to the destruction of the Library/Museum of Alexandria.  It will be argued that these events played the key role that brought about the onset of the Dark Ages.
