DECOMMISSIONING OF SAN ONOFRE UNIT 1

REPORT:
67 ASME members and guests attended the tour on December 13.  The tour guides were great.  Many people stayed afterwards to see the simulator.  We thank San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station for taking their time to show us the facilities and for sharing the food costs with us.

==================
Nuclear power has been gaining some ground recently with energy deregulation, the ever increasing demand for power, and the concern for global warming.  One issue with nuclear power is the safe decommissioning of the facility at the end of its life.  San Onofre Unit 1 has been decommissioned and a tour of the decommissioned area is planned.  The tour will be followed by lunch and a technical presentation on various challenges encountered.  We have invited the Orange County Section of ASME to join us so there will be additional opportunity for networking.
