MARCH 23 NEWSLETTER:
Greetings,
Welcome to the first edition of the HPS2004 Contestant Newsletter.  This forum is meant as a means to communicate various pertinent information to contestants in the ASME/IEEE/HTH Human Powered Submarine Design Competition and Race.  Expect to see reminders of due dates, clarification of rules and answers to any questions posed to the organization committee.  If you have any questions regarding the event, please direct them to paul.crivelli@hp.com and HPS200X@yahoo.com.  Questions will be answered directly and a copy will be included in future Contestant Newsletters.  Unless you meant to, please do not reply to all, as the distribution list is large.

Questions from Teams, Answered by the Committee
Q: If we have new team members who join after 4/30 can we register them after the deadline?
A: No.  If a team member joins after 4/30, Its a safe bet that they have not been sufficiently involved with the design, construction and testing of your sub.  They can not enter the water as a member of your team.  However the competition is open to the public and all are welcome as spectators.  Your school's future teams will have a great advantage if some of the members have been able to experience the event live.  In fact, if a student has even the remotest plans of being involved with a design competition project in the future, to attend and observe would be a great learning experience.

Hints & Past Learnings
Remember, the sooner you get your sub wet, i.e. test it, the sooner you'll find things that need to be corrected.  Every year the basin reverberates with teams making last minute modifications & fixes.  The more you have to fix, the less time you have for racing!

Hope all is going well with your designs, and I'm looking forward to seeing you in the water in July!
