History and Restoration of the Fairmount Park Waterworks
Plymouth Meeting, PA

Speakers: Gail Tomlinson, Director. Fairmount Park Waterworks Interpretive Center Claire Donato, Project Manager, Mark Thompson Architects
Time: Tuesday March 20, 2001, Registration 6:00 PM, Dinner 6:30, presentation 7:15
Place: Guest Quarters Hotel, Plymouth Meeting, PA.

Construction of the Fairmount Park Waterworks began in 1812 and operation began in 1815. The success of Philadelphia as a city is in great part due to the water supplied by this unique facility. The waterworks continued in operation until 1911 when it was converted to an aquarium. Currently the city is restoring the site and has created an Interpretive Center to present the history of the waterworks. The building restoration and reconstruction of the water wheel, which replaced the original steam engines in 1822, is almost complete.

Ms Tomlinson and Ms Donato will present the development and technology of the waterworks and also discuss the current work to restore the site to its original elegance.
