New High Velocity Steel Tooth Bits

with

Bobby Grimes

Manager, Technology Services
Hughes Christensen Co.

In spite of significant PDC encroachment into traditional roller-cone applications, steel tooth (ST) bits still drill approximately one-half of the total footage in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico (GoM). The PDC vs ST bit selection is largely driven by the type of drilling fluid specified, OBM/SBM vs WBM. Additionally, the ST bit's resistance to balling in WBM and its desirable steerability characteristics make it a viable tool in the GoM for the foreseeable future.

ST performance has increased significantly over the last decade due primarily to technical advances in life and reliability of both bearings and cutting structures. The improved bearings yield longer runs with reduced risk of failure. Increased tooth wear resistance from advanced hardfacing allows long hole sections at sustained ROP's. Despite these advances, the basic ST cutting structure has remained fundamentally unchanged for four decades.

R&D efforts from the 1990's convinced one manufacturer an extensive research effort was warranted to develop a new ST cutting structure that delivered substantial improvements in ROP without sacrificing durability. The result is a new High-Velocity Steel Tooth (HVST) bit with the industry's first significant new ST cutting structure arrangement in more than a decade. The new design bits feature a novel cutting structure with patented pyramid-shaped teeth, additional rows of teeth, wide grooves between rows, anti-tracking row(s) with tight pitches, thick hardfacing deposits, and a new bar trimmer type gauge design.

The result is a steel tooth bit that delivers significantly higher ROP and longer life than current designs, with high reliability, and predictable steering behavior for directional applications. Hole sections can often be completed with fewer bits, which further improves drilling economics. The new technology bits are having a beneficial impact on drilling economics in GoM and around the world by delivering unmatched ROP and greater footage than conventional ST bits.

This presentation will describe the new bit design's unique features and characteristics, review the laboratory and field test results, and finally present case studies documenting the performance improvements these new bits provide when compared with conventional steel tooth bits in the U.S. GoM and in Australasia (Indonesia, Australia, PNG and New Zealand).

Sustainable Petrochemical Business Practices

Calvin Cobb with

Calvin Cobb, Ph.D.

Calvin Cobb & Co.

The Institute for Sustainability of AIChE has developed and published a Sustainability Index for the oil and gas industry and the traditional chemical processing industry. Sustainability--and incorporation of sustainability concepts into industrial operations--is important to the future of corporate performance, to public acceptance of industrial facilities, and to the engineering profession and individual engineers.

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) formed the Institute for Sustainability (IfS) in 2004 to promote the societal, economic and environmental benefits of sustainable and green engineering. IfS serves the needs--and influences the efforts of--engineers and scientists in industry, academia, and government. Engineers and scientists working with IfS have defined sustainability as “the path of continuous improvement, wherein the products and services required by society are delivered with progressively less negative impact upon the Earth.”

As more corporations move down a sustainable path, they are finding that they need meaningful metrics to measure their sustainability progress at many levels, from that of the practicing engineering to the CEO. The objectives of the AIChE Sustainability Index (SI) are to leverage internal technical expertise to support the implementation and alignment of sustainability and drive better reporting of technically informed sustainability data.

The SI is intended for use by executives and business managers for total company business lines. Although the initial focus is on major energy and chemical companies, the expectation is that the index will grow to embrace other industrial sectors and be global in its assessments. While the publication will be silent on individual company ratings, companies will find it useful to benchmark themselves relative to the set of companies that make up the index rating.

A few notes about our Distinguished Speaker :

Dr. Calvin Cobb is a Past Prsident of AIChE and this is a small sample of their praise for him....

"Dr. Calvin B. Cobb is as authentic as they come. An admired professional, inspiring leader, compassionate advisor, tireless volunteer, and devoted family man, there is much to learn from each aspect of Calvin's life but more to learn from the balance he strikes to weave it all together. He’s a talented artist – both a woodworker and metalworker – and an architect – building an authentic Colonial home and surrounding gardens brick by brick, board by board. He has both vision and technical expertise and has employed them all, in equal measure, to make a difference both in his life and the lives of those around him."

Calvin Cobb recently retired from a 35 year career as a consultant. The major part of his consulting career was spent as President of Wright Killen & Co., a partner at Ernst & Young, and with Cap Gemini Ernst & Young. He was the recent chair of the AIChE Institute for Sustainability and serves as chairman of the board for the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, TX.

An excellent biography with more details and tribute is found at Calvin B. Cobb from AIChE.

Congratulations to NWHSS Member Dr. Joe Fowler, President, Stress Engineering Services, for being honored with the Geoca Mechanical Engineering Award at the 4th Annual American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ International Petroleum Technology Institute Best Mechanical Engineering Awards Reception during OTC on May 5, 2008.

Several Members of NWHSS received prestigious awards at the South Texas Section ASME Honors & Awards Banquet in April for their outstanding service to oue ASME community. We know you will want to congratulate these folks on their award and their recognition.

  • Ryan Schmidt received the Past Chairman’s award
  • Chris Alexander received the Meritorious Service Award for his work in leading the Pressure Vessel seminar.
  • Terry Lechinger received the Alan J. Chapman Award. Dr Chapman was a distinguished heat transfer professor at Rice, and was Rice’s NCAA representative for many years.
  • Clint Britt received the W.R. Woolrich Engineer of the Year Award. Dean Woolrich was he Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Texas in the 1930’s and 40’s.

Outstanding Service may never be more appropriately defined than by the dedicated leadership and long time service to ASME of Clint Britt. As organizer of the annual Trade Show put on by the Plant Engineering and Maintenance Technical Chapter, our Educational Fund for College Scholarships has not only thrived and been distributed each year, the fund has nearly tripled from what Clint helped create over 20 years ago. Our goal for this scholarship program benefitting our local ME college students is to be self sustaining. We will be there soon, and we can always remember the extra efforts by so many to get there!

Gaskets and Gasket Selection

with

Stephen Bond, Ph.D.
Vice President of Technology
Flexitallic

Gaskets are often one of the last items in a design to be considered. In the grand scheme of things, gaskets are a relatively low cost item; however the consequence of using a gasket incorrectly (or even the wrong gasket) can be very expensive.

We will review the function of a gasket in a joint, along with the main types of gaskets available today. The pros and cons of certain designs will be discussed, along with typical applications and application criteria for each gasket type. We will concentrate somewhat on newer gasket materials and designs.

Don Bray
Evaluation Of Load Damage In Steel Using The LCR Ultrasonic Technique

with

Don E. Bray, Ph.D., P. E.
President and Chief Engineer
Don E. Bray, Inc.

Piping and pressure vessels are on occasion subjected to overload that may affect their ability to perform the role for which they were designed. A combination of velocity change and frequency analysis for near surface longitudinal (LCR) waves is used to evaluate load damage past the yield point in 4140 steel.

Prior work has shown that loading past the yield point affects the velocity in the bar. Further, frequency analysis has been shown to predict the fracture toughness in AISI 4137 steel used in offshore drilling. The present project joins these two approaches and uses velocity measurement and frequency analysis at different locations in the steel bar. Some locations were subjected to post-yield loading and others were not. Discussion on applying the technique to detecting hydrogen attack is included.

Addtional information is avaialble at the speaker's website.
