Summary from the Chair


Last November 4th was the scheduled date of our annual engineering festival we call Family Appreciation Day. This year we selected the theme FEST 2000 to honor the Families, Engineers, and Students in Technology. On Nov 4 someone suggested we subtitle this as Flooded Engineers Seek Tent because of the extreme flooding marking the end of our extreme and prolonged drought. But the fourth year of the event was not a complete wash out as we welcomed the hearty who came out in the rain to come indoors for a much scaled back day of entertainment at SHRP.

In our first 3 years, you may recall the extreme heat of the bright August sun. This year with our rescheduled and renamed SPRING FEST 2000+1, we were pleased to bring you a cool, shady and very breezy afternoon on March 10 as the fifth outing for this festival. Please let the record reflect our precision timing for this as March 11 brought more deluges and flooding.

On behalf of our multi-society co-hosts, and our supporting sponsors, I want to thank each attendee and committee member for your personal support by purchasing tickets and helping to stage the event under these challenging conditions. I am proud to be an engineer and I am really grateful to my family for their support of my profession. I know you also share these sentiments for your family. We live in a great place and time to be an engineer, and we have put forth this effort to let everyone know this. Our event is a fund raiser to support our student education projects. We want these young people to know that we want to help them become engineers and keep our technology based economy strong and prosperous.

I want to thank our EFAD Committee for their work in preparing this event, and our ASME Petroleum Division for their dedicated support and Staff to make this happen. Sponsor support is gratefully acknowleged as critical for the funding of this volunteer activity.

For the opening ceremony I was pleased to introduce a great engineer, Dr. Joe Fowler, President of Stress Engineering Services (a major Triple Crown Sponsor of our event), and the current President of ABET. ABET's job is to assure our universities are producing the best engineers in the world. Another great Past Chair of the ASME Petroleum Division was present, and Ross Kastor and Joe Fowler were presented the Proclamation from our former Govenor of Texas, George W. Bush, who had sent this earlier message:

This November 4 event in Houston provides a great opportunity for engineers and their families to enjoy time together.

Engineers play a vital role in many critical industries and projects and must often travel to distant locations to fulfill job duties. I commend the event's sponsors and organizers for providing a time of relaxation and recreation for these dedicated professionals and their loved ones. Your efforts support families and strengthen the community.

Laura joins me in sending best wishes for a fun-filled and memorable event.

The planning and elaborate setup for the afternoon went very smoothly thanks to the work of Lisa Clapp, Amrah Goebel, and Vitina Cosse of the ASME Petroleum Division Staff. Special thanks to ASCE Committee member Jolene Eulitt for picking up and bringing in the bar-b-que and food. Over 200 attendees were met and welcomed by SPE Committee members Carbett Duhon and Buddy Woodroof. Robert Bourque, Tony Leigh, and Lucia Sevcik with Texas Best Robotic students from Pasadena and Booker T. Washington were there to show their work and let the attendees have a try at driving the robots. First Robots were busy preparing for next week's Regional startups. One of the popular attractions for the day was face painting compliments of Committee Member Buddy Woodroof's wife. Kids had a ball with the gingerbread construction contest organized by our ASCE Co-Hosts led by Jolene Eulitt. Slinky races were well received, as fun and take home souvenirs featuring "Turning Ideas into Reality". Thank you Dr. Lori Hasselbring of AIChE and your team for putting this together. Glenn MacDonald, ASME STS Chair, pitched horse shoes and handed out medals. There were many other games, races, and prizes galore to all participants. This really was a kids focused event! Congratulations to all!
