Meeting Minutes

10/2/2003      General Meeting       Sophie’s Station       Attendance – 12

The meeting was called to order at 12:07 by Chair, Ed Bargar.  Ed began by introducing this year’s officers. The meeting date has officially been changed to the first Thursday of each month in order to avoid conflicting with the ASHRAE meetings. Local high school and college paper writing competitions were discussed for distributing scholarship money and generating interest in mechanical engineering.

Dr. Das is acting as student ASME advisor and introduced the student chair, Josh Craft. Dr. Das is interested in collecting over 50 signatures of current ASME members to advance our status from Group to Subsection. Benefits of being recognized as a Subsection would include more corporate ASME investment in the form of outside speakers and short courses. The Anchorage ASME is in favor of the petition and would like to see us move up to a Subsection. Everyone at the meeting was given a petition sheet to collect names, signatures, and addresses of current ASME members who are in favor of the change.

ASME Longevity Awards were presented by Dr. Das.  Dr. John Zarling received a lifetime membership award for 35 years of membership.  It is believed to be the first one awarded in Fairbanks.  Ed Bargar received an award for 25 years of membership.

The presentation was on Defects in the Alyeska Pipeline by Bhaskar Neogi. The defects caused by rocks, settlement, and mechanical damage are located using highly specialized pigs. Data from the pig runs is analyzed and suspect areas are excavated for further inspection. Factors for determining the severity of the dents included membrane stress, line pressure cycles, geometry, and non-restrained fatigue. Bhaskar discussed criteria used to determine further inspection and regulatory requirements by the federal government.
