The ASME New Orleans Section is always looking for science and technology professionals to help mentor students in the FIRST Robotics Competition and FIRST LEGO League Competition. This is an exciting opportunity to help inspire local students to explore careers in science and technology while having lots of fun at the same time.
Several teams from the New Orleans area competed in the 2005 FIRST Robotics regional competition. Each team requires several mentors. New Orleans plans to host a regional competition in the future.
New Orleans hosted the first Louisiana regional tournament in 2003 and this event continues to grow every year.

Teams of high school students are given six weeks to build a robot to
solve a given problem. Besides providing opportunities for students to learn about
the design, construction, and programming of a robot, they also learn the importance
of brainstorming, organized project planning, and teamwork. The teams test out their
robots at regional and possibly national high-tech spectator sporting events.
