The Kansas City Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (KCASME) will be awarding student scholarships in January 2009.
The scholarships will be awarded to ASME student members who attend one of the six universities that our section covers (Kansas State University, University of Kansas, University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Missouri-Columbia, Johnson County Community College, and the Metropolitan Community Colleges). Recipients must be student members of ASME, actively enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, and show financial need. We are hoping to award up to $2000 in scholarships.
Interested students should complete the attached scholarship application and mail it to the address above or scan and e-mail by December 31, 2008. Scholarships will be awarded by check to winning students in January (winners will be notified by e-mail and phone). When sending in an application, please send an email to me at hartwichr@asme.org so that I can watch for its arrival. Also, please keep a copy of your application until I have confirmed its arrival.
Please send your applications and/or questions as soon as possible.

Q&A
Q: Can I modify the application? A: Yes, feel free to alter the application and add pages to suit your needs. However, please try and keep your application as short as possible to make it easier on the judges and fair to everyone.
Q: Can I submit the application electronically? A: Yes, you can submit via email. Scanned in (w/signature) as images, PDF, or DOC are fine.
Q: How steep is my competition? Are there hundreds of applicants? A: You stand a fairly good chance of being awarded a scholarship. We intend to award scholarships to four people and in previous years have averaged less than 15 applicants.
Q: Should I type my application? A: Yes, please type your application if at all possible. The majority of applicants (and winners) in the past have edited the Word files and typed directly in them. We are not particular on the layout/beauty of the application and would prefer not to read hand written applications.
Q: What is the criteria for awarding the scholarships? A: We have approximately 13 areas we are considering broken into four main areas: extracuricular, academic, financial & subjective.
Q: What kind of volunteer ideas are you looking for? A: Almost anything that will help others (preferably in an engineering related way). For instance, consider going to a high school and talking to a physics class about engineering, writing a brief article for our website (with pictures) to help educate engineers and students about a research project or design project you are working on, or tutor liberal arts majors in math.
