Bobby Moisiadis describes the Human Powered Vehicle Capstone Project.
The slide and video presentation spelled out the design objectives and how the ASME requirements for a HPV are complied with. The transfer of energy from human power to the wheels was the principle challenge. Mr. Moisiadis described in detail the structure and rationale for choosing the vehicle configuration, the skeleton of which is pictured below. Each competing team completes an in-depth report, and presents a summary of the vehicle design and testing for judging by experienced engineers. Teams compete to demonstrate the capability of their HPV entry through sprint and endurance events. Designs may include one or more entries in three vehicle classes—single rider, multiperson and utility vehicles. Competition awards include cash prizes for best overall scores in each of the three vehicle classes. Prizes may be awarded to both student teams and the Mechanical Engineering Department they represent. Fairfiled U Students participates in the single rider event. (See th article covering the ASME competition.) Team member, Kimberly Bushinsky is shown below at the controls of the completed HPV.
