A valuable presentation on personal finance, retirement planning and education funds by UBS Financial Services was give at the University of Dayton School of Engineering, co-sponsored by AIAA.  This particular event was the first personnel life presentations we have had.  If there is interest in similar events (lawyer talk, home buying, identity theft, etc..)  please contact Daniel Strong

DelFly Micro Air Vehicle Talk, Friday October 12

ASME, in conjunction with Wright State University, AIAA and SAE planned an event with researchers from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.  The DelFly is a Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) that attempts to imitate the flight of insects and birds developed by a team of undergraduate students and faculty advisors. With the use of two sets of flapping wings DelFly is able to maintain steady flight and propels itself in a slow stable forward motion.  The DelFly is not only capable of performing a straight and horizontal flight, but it can also transform to a very slow, hovering flight. This property is unique for a flapping wing vehicle. The DelFly is also equipped with an onboard camera, which gives in combination with the very slow flight speed a very good overview of the surroundings. The DelFly is able to recognize targets and objects from the video images, and in the very near future it can fly autonomously by video images.

3rd Annual Dayton Engineering Sciences Symposium, 29 October

The 3rd Annual DESS was held at Wright State University's Student Union on October 29, 2007 and was huge success.  This year’s symposium featured 106 presentations spanning a broad range of engineering sciences.  In addition to scientific research, the symposium included special sessions on both Undergraduate Projects and Engineering Education, as well as significant participation from local industry.  This year’s symposium had a special emphasis on technical innovation.  To this end, the Keynote Address was  given by Susan Bodary, Executive Director of EDvention, an organization affiliated with the University of Dayton and tasked with accelerating talent capable of enhancing innovation in the Dayton region.  Her presentation provided vision for accomplishing a growing talent, capable of enhancing innovation, in the Dayton region and the role that EDvention will play.  Additionally, an industrial panel from companies in the Dayton-Cincinnati region recognized as innovators  discussed the role of innovation in their organization, and subsequent industrial speakers talked about innovation best practices and support available to innovators in the Miami Valley.  We are looking forward to the 4th DESS next year and would appreciate any feedback about this years event, especially suggestions on how to improve this event in the future.

Dinner with the Real World Event, November 2

This dinner event was hosted by the University of Dayton School of Engineering as a part of their New Engineers program.  Working engineers (many of them graduates of the university) were invited to have dinner with freshmen engineering students to talk about their experiences since college.  This was a valuable opportunity for the engineers to share lessons learned, recommend graduate school and discuss the various jobs that an engineer may have.  The students asked several questions about co-op programs, the day-to-day work load for practicing engineers and looking for a job after graduation.

“Presentation of Information” by John Clarke, Thursday November 8

ASME, in conjunction with AIAA hosted an event with John Clarke, a professor at the University of Dayton.  John spoke about presenting information, both technical and non-technical, to a diverse audience.  This event was held at the Der Dutchmen Restaurant in Waynesville.  If there is interest in holding other events at location other than universities, we will gladly make those arrangements.
