educational, and research issues of the engineering and technology
community. ASME conducts one of the world's largest technical publishing
operations, holds numerous technical conferences worldwide, and offers
hundreds of professional development courses each year. ASME sets
internationally recognized industrial and manufacturing codes and standards
that enhance public safety. The vision of ASME is to be the premier
organization for promoting the art, science, and practice of mechanical and

Dayton Section Social Event -
Join us at Wright State University,
Tuesday, May 5 at 7:30 in
292 Joshi for a very special and interesting presentation entitled
"Solar Autoclave for Rural Health Clinics in Developing Nations".
Maria Fullenkamp is the
vice- president of the Wright State ASME branch and will speak about
her summer service learning project in Nicaragua. Currently
rural health clinics in Nicaragua travel once a week by bus to
sterilize their medical equipment. Because of their limited
amount of sterilized medical utensils, these rural health clinics
often face the decision of whether to use contaminated medical
equipment, or simply to turn patients away. To address this problem,
this summer she will be traveling to rural Nicaragua to test solar
autoclaves through a group called ETHOS (Engineers for Technical
Humanitarian Opportunities for Service-Learning). The solar
autoclave design has been developed by another ETHOS student and
this summer she will be testing this device with three other ETHOS
students and eventually they plan to implement the solar autoclave
in Sabana Grande, Nicaragua as well as other developing countries
facing the same problem. An informal pizza social will following
Maria's half hour presentation. This event is free and open to
the public, so please come and support this unique public service
project!
Directions: From
Colonel Glenn Highway, turn on to University Boulevard, take the
first right, and then a left to park in Visitor Parking (Lot 2).
Joshi building is the glass building directly across the street,
between the Student Union and the Russ Engineering building.

4th Annual Dayton Engineering Sciences
Symposium - This year's
Dayton Engineering Sciences Symposium was held on October 27.
The symposium is an annual Dayton ASME event designed to
facilitate communication between members of the regional technical
community, as well as to provide a forum for students (both
undergraduate and graduate), researchers, and engineering practitioners to present
their work. This years symposium was an outstanding success and
featured 98 technical presentations in 20 sessions spanning a broad
range of engineering science topics, with a special emphasis on
Energy. The keynote speech was delivered by Mr. William
Harrison, the Technical Director of Fuels and Energy for the Air Force
Research Laboratory's Propulsion Directorate. The keynote
presentation was followed by a panel session where experts engaged in
a lively discussion to cultivate a greater understanding of energy
issues, present challenges, and future opportunities for the science
and engineering communities. We would like to thank everyone who
participated for making this event possible, especially our industry
sponsors. You can find additional details about this year's
event at the DESS website, such as a list of the abstracts presented,
the symposium program, and photos from the event here:
