Chairman’s Comments

There is a Chinese saying that goes "May you live in interesting times". Well, that’s been the case nationally and locally for the past several months. We have also found that we’ve had to wait for some of our events to finalize in this climate. The executive committee hopes to end this year with two big tours.

Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics Surveillance Systems will be toured at their Archibald, PA facility on April 29th. This is a must see. Thank you, Alan Battaglia (Anthracite Area Manager) for working so hard to setup this event.

On May 1st, we will be touring Bosch Rexroth, manufacturer of industrial hydraulic systems, at their Lehigh Valley facility. This event will cap our double-header week. Please see the following information and restrictions for these events.

The Final Bow

It’s nearing the end of my two-year term as chairman. I want to thank Jeff, Glenn, Doug, Tobi, Mike, Alan, Ed, and Dr. Merz for making my time pleasant and productive. If you run into any of these officers, please take the time to say "thank you". They volunteer their efforts for the advancement of their profession.

My father was my example of contributing one’s time. He would bump into people everywhere around Easton and have a story to tell about their work together. Only later did I really understand that you get more when you give. Being your chairman has helped me to identify my strengths, work on my weaknesses, and share from other’s experiences. Many of you already contribute to extra activities. But if you presently don’t have one or are between activities (because we all change over time), consider giving time to your profession.

I leave you now in the very capable hands of Doug Robertson. He has been your Vice-Chair for the past several years as he completed an advanced degree. He has contributed his time to the ASME on the regional level and we are fortunate to have his services. He has a recent addition of a second child to his family, so the executive committee has volunteered babysitting duties. As for me, I’ll probably not venture far.

So long and thanks for all of the fish.

- Douglas Adams, Author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Lehigh Valley Engineer’s Week Banquet

Our section sponsored a table at the annual Engineer’s Week Banquet on February 21st at the Radisson Hotel in Bethlehem, PA. The LVEC presented awards for K-8 essay winners, Young Engineer of the Year, and Engineer of the Year. The guest speaker was Dr. John Fisher who talked about the failure mechanism of the WTC collapse. For more details, see www.lvengineer.com .

Mega-RAC (Regional Administrative Conference) Mar. 6-8th

This year the ASME regions 1, 2 and 3 (your region) decided to combine their conferences and meet at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ. Doug Robertson attended on our behalf, presented the section annual report, and presented a training session on the last day. He reported that individual session covered a wide range of topics from a Town Hall meeting including ASME President Susan Skemp, elections of regional officers, to a Young Engineers forum.
