Rocky Mountain Power Gatsby Plant

On May 22, next Thursday, we will be having a tour of the Rocky Mountain Power Gatsby Plant on North Temple Street in Salt Lake City.  This plant has natural gas fired turbine generators as well as a natural gas fired steam generator.  All of the power generation made at the Gatsby Plant is peak demand.  Late May will be a good time to tour the plant when the equipment will likely be operating.  The steam plant has a large furnace with multiple burners with sight glasses to see into the furnace.  For those who have not seen something like this, the flame from each of the burners is quite impressive.

We will be able to go in the control room and see the operation of the plant, as well.  They will be adding wind turbine control at this plant as well.  In May, we may be able to see the control schematics of the wind turbines.

Open toe shoes are not allowed.  Hard hats and safety glasses will be provided.  Back packs or large bags are not allowed.  The tour will take about 1.5 hours.  Meet at the guard station near the building with the three tall smoke stacks.

Space is limited and several have signed up already, but we should have space for you.  Please RSVP as soon as possible.

Dear Colleague, I wanted to send you a personal invitation on behalf of the Utah Cyberinfrastructure Committee to visit Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah, August 12-15 and be a part of the Utah Advanced Computing Summer Institute (UACSI).

During these four days in August, our aim is to provide faculty, students and industry representatives from different backgrounds and levels of expertise in High Performance Computing (HPC) with an exciting mixture of tutorials and presentations, and an opportunity to network with peers and experts in the field of HPC.  The institute will especially benefit those in engineering,  science, mathematics,   computer science  and technical fields.

For more details and to register for the UACSI, please visit   www.utahci.org .  We hope you and your colleagues will be able to join us for this learning opportunity, while at the same time enjoying the wonderful summer activities and attractions of Southern Utah.

Cedar City (www.cedarcity.org) is known as “the Festival City  USA.”  It is just a short drive from several breathtaking parks, including Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and the Grand Canyon.  Cedar City is also the home of the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival (www.bard.org ).

Networking

Networking is a great activity for a successful career and it doesn't take a lot of time.  Great relationships can be built in professional associations developing a network that is both wide and deep with a time commitment of just one or two hours per month.  Consider the following experience.  "Recently, I made a change in my employment.  The key
relationship of my network that enabled my new employment was from a relationship established 10 years previous through leadership involvement in ASME."  You never know when or how valued relationships will help you.
Networking is more than just having contacts for future employment.  Resources developed are wonderful and are very useful in many ways.  Just because you are a member of ASME, does not automatically provide these resources.  Relationships have to be developed and nourished.  I have noticed over the years, individuals I don't know will show up to a meeting and indicate that they are looking for a job.  Typically, I never see them again.  They will probably tell you that professional association networking is worthless.

We would like to create stronger activity in the Utah Section of ASME.  We would like to develop better networking opportunities for you.  If you are interested in networking opportunities and section activities, please send an e-mail to
merrilldb@asme.org.  We will be setting up a meeting, probably in the Ogden area in the next few weeks and invite you to attend.
