Message from the Chair Dear Members, Whew! This newsletter is a little late, so I apologize for that. However, it gives me a chance to wish all of you well as you dig out from the snowstorm that hit southwestern PA and the mid-Atlantic states. I hope that the disruption to your lives and schedules is not severe, and I hope that all of you are safe and sound. The 2010 Future Cities Competition at the Carnegie Museum was fun and was well attended. Congratulation to this year's overall winner: St. Bede School. Also, congratulations to the winner of the most effective moveable part sponsored by ASME PIttsburgh Section: Fort Cherry Junior / Senior High School. More information about the rest of the winners can be found later in the newsletter. Best wishes are extended to St. Bede School because they now move on to Washington, D.C. for the National Competition that is part of Engineers Week 2010. While St. Bede School won't be here in Pittsburgh for that week, the locals will continue to be active by supporting the 2010 Engineers Week Event at the Carnegie Science Center. We hope that you can take part or at least stop in at the Carnegie Science Center to check out the hard work that went into the displays. Further info about this event can be found on the front page of the newsletter. Just a reminder. If you wish to become involved with the ASME Pittsburgh Section, please contact Ron Kalnas at rskalnas@earthlink.net or any member of the Executive Committee. We look forward to hearing from you! Lastly, on a sad note, I want to note the passing of Board of Directors
Member Thomas (Rip) Curran on January 21, 2010. He was a special person
and was a long-time participant and strong supporter of the ASME. He will
be sorely missed. More at http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/postgazette/obituary.aspx?n=thomas-curran-rip&pid=138774595

Notices FIRST Robotic Regional Competition One event in which the ASME Pittsburgh Section is becoming more involved is the FIRST Robotics Competition. The vision of FIRST is best stated by its founder, Dean Kamen: "To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes." The mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. The competition consists of student teams whose goal is to conceive, manufacture, and demonstrate through competition their robotic solutions to a technical problem. The students are mentored by a team of adults consisting of professionals and technical people. Regional competitions are held that feed into the championship event. This year's championship will be held in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA on April 15-17, 2010. However, to get there, the local team will have to survive the Pittsburgh Regional competition on March 12-13, 2010 at the Petersen Event Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. We hope that you can attend the Regional Competition! For more information about FIRST, please see the website at http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/ May Event - Boltech Mannings Tour For tour and sign-up details, see the Upcoming Events Page. June Event - ASME Annual Meeting ASME Annual Meeting, June 5-8, 2010 This year's Annual Meeting of the ASME will be held in Pittsburgh, PA at the Omni William Penn Hotel. The planning is in the early stages, so stage tuned for more information as it becomes available. One of the main events during the meeting is the Innovation Showcase (IShow). Student teams are invited to apply for a spot. March 5 is the deadline to apply and participate in the competition, which provides teams of undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to present their innovative product ideas to a panel of experts for an opportunity to win seed money to bring their inventions to market. For more information on the ASME IShow, visit www.asme.org/Communities/Entrepreneur/Innovation_Showcase_IShow.cfm, or contact Patti Jo Snyder, (202) 785-7387, e-mail SnyderP@asme.org.

Some Technology Humor (true story): A former Canadian defense minister says the answer to concerns about climate change is technology from UFOs. He's demanding that governments worldwide use secret alien technology to replace fossil fuels and save the planet from global warming. Paul Hellyer served in the Canadian cabinet in the sixties. He tells the Ottawa Citizen that governments have alien technology they obtained from the crashes of UFOs. He says those spacecrafts were equipped with advanced fuel sources and propulsion systems that could eliminate the burning of fossil fuel within a generation. Olny srmat poelpe can raed tihs! A new daily public radio program, "Voices of Innovation," launched by the American Association of Engineering Societies with generous support from ASME, features some 200 engineers in 2-minute programs that explore and celebrate the world of engineering. The program began airing in April 2002. To be considered for one of the programs, engineers need to submit a story idea form, which is available at www.voicesofinnovation.org.
E-Mentoring Program to Expand to Young Engineers The success of last year's program and the enthusiastic response of members wanting to become mentors has fueled the expansion of the e-Mentoring program. This program for student members is expanding to include mentoring services for engineers who have recently (5 years or less) graduated from engineering school. Young engineers can now benefit from the career advice of more seasoned engineers in their particular field of interest. Recent graduates may get even more benefit from a mentoring relationship, since they have some experience and may have more specific career questions. How does the program work? Students and young engineers (mentees) seeking a mentor choose from a database of names, which gives information about the mentor's background, experience and engineering specialty. Mentees are then asked to fill out an online application indicating their top three choices for mentors. The mentor requests are evaluated by ASME and matched on a first come, first served basis. Only members are eligible to participate in this program as a mentor or mentee. Anyone wishing to find a mentor or to volunteer to become a mentor for a student or young engineer member should visit the website at www.asme.org/ementoring. Volunteers can choose to mentor a student, a young engineer or both. Questions about the program should be addressed to Deidra Hackley, at hackleyd@asme.org.
Nominations Needed for Young Engineers Award ASME International wants to give $5,000 plus a prepaid life membership to a young ASME member that has done an outstanding job in their profession, community, and the work of ASME. If you know someone who deserves to win this award, please nominate a young engineer for the Old Guard Young Engineers Award today! For more information, visit http://www.asme.org/cma/og/youngengineer.html .
